PERIFERIA

— La Feria beyond the frame

Periferia is a chronicle of what escapes Seville’s official celebration — an intimate photographic testimony of what happens when the Feria de Abril x know it’s being watched. Because periphery is not a place — it is, above all, a way of seeing.

This exhibition features the work of French photographer and director Julien Soulier, who approaches — quietly, almost unseen — the most iconic folkloric and flamenco occasion of southern Spain.

With the eye of an outsider, and the certainty that the most genuine and raw are not in the postcard, but behind it, his foreignness is not a barrier but a possibility: the chance to explore the Feria and its people by stepping away from the obvious, to capture with his lens what remains out of frame. His gaze is not foreign because he is French, but because it is free — free from the need to confirm, to repeat, to reproduce the expected. In this way, Julien shows that even in the heart of the Feria, there is a Periferia.

A peripheral vision of the Seville Fair — a drift into the unseen. Those fragile, passing instants that evade the gaze yet carry the Fair’s truest beauty. A gaze that slips away from the centre of celebration, seeking the outskirts where reality softens, where gestures breathe slower, where light reveals what noise obscures — the human tremor beneath the ritual.

This vision takes shape in a photographic exhibition inhabiting singular, contemplative spaces. Julien Soulier’s images unveil a world of quiet intensity, distilling the Feria into intimate fragments — luminous, tender, deeply evocative. Around these images, the experience widens into immersive and spontaneous flamenco moments: fleeting encounters that echo those born within the Fair itself, rising like sparks in the midst of its restless tide. International artists join the presentation, including Lori la Armenia — recently highlighted by Vogue as one of the most essential voices in contemporary flamenco.

From this universe emerges a rare performance by Farruquito — the living legend of flamenco, widely regarded as the most important bailaor of his generation, whose life has just been chronicled in the newly released documentary Serás Farruquito, premiered at DOCNYC. Here, he offers a solitary rite in which he returns to his most private memories of the Feria — an immersive, unrepeatable passage where he sings, plays, and dances in communion with Soulier’s imagery: a moment captured by Julien Soulier, imagined by A Flamenco Catharsis, and co-produced by Leplató and Galerie Paradis.

The project was first unveiled on October 16, 2025, at Galerie Paradis in Paris — a three-storey art space where twenty-six of Soulier’s works were exhibited, welcoming more than five hundred visitors on its opening night. Both the exhibition and the performance are conceived as living forms that adapt to the architecture of each venue, allowing the experience to shift, breathe, and reshape itself with every new space it inhabits.
